Understanding dowsing

Dowsing is the marriage of the scientific and the intuitive. In understanding dowsing we extend our knowledge and experience of the subtle energies of the world around us.

The roots of dowsing can be traced back to antiquity. Some say that pictographs on the walls of the Tassili Caves in Algeria bear the earliest evidence of dowsing being used, being dated to 32,000 years ago. However the radio-carbon dating of cave materials is less precise than would be hoped for. Whatever the exact date, the great antiquity of these cave paintings are not in question.

The Chinese emperor Yu personally dowsed over 2,000 years before Christ. Etchings of him holding dowsing instruments are recorded.

The ancient Egyptians took up the art of dowsing, and some believe that references in in the Bible speak of this, specifically Ezra 3:63 of the Old Testament, where it is written:

“The governor told the people not to partake of the most holy food until the priest contacted Urin & Thummin”.

In Samuel 28:6 it says,

“When Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer either in dreams by the prophets or by Urim & Thymmin”.

Some academics are convinced that the words Urim & Thumin referred to dowsing devices which could have supplied crucial information and sometimes refused to do so because the priestly dowser held the wrong attitudes or phrased their questions in an incorrect manner.

It has been through the highly practical use of dowsing to find water, oil, coal, minerals, cables and pipes, that the art has survived through to today, especially in the west. Traditionally the church has been set against it, but if something works for the benefit of all, it will by and large survive. In fact water company vans often have dowsing rods as part of their standard tool kits!

The power and use of dowsing has been extended to locate missing people, lost objects and animals, and to diagnose illness. Dowsing may be used for a simple yes or no answer. A yes answer causes the pendulum to swing up and down. A no answer is left to right. Thus used the pendulum is a key to open our intuition & connect with the higher self.

The pendulum allows us to communicate with our own Divine Intuitive Self. Do you have difficulty distinguishing psychic guidance from your own thoughts? If you are not psychic you probably do. A pendulum can be the first step in learning how to receive intuition for your growth and healing. Remember there is no right way for everyone to dowse, and as you practice at dowsing, you’ll find what works best for you. Psychic forces guide the path of the swing of the pendulum in regards to a Yes or No question.

about dowsing - Roger Davies, Spirit TeacherDowsing is a form of divination, a form of question asking, not unlike tarot or the runes, except that in dowsing you will get a yes or no answer. At times this simplicity is absolutely invaluable.

Dowsing for water involves using a forked branch of a tree, or even a metal coat hanger! The two forks are held in the hands of the person dowsing, and the main branch will bend toward the direction of the water. This technique has also been used in dowsing for minerals, oil, graves, treasure. You name it, it can be dowsed for!

We can use dowsing in the search for ley lines and Geopathic Stress.

There is also the theory that as everything resonates to a frequency we can tune in to the frequency we are looking for and a dowsing instrument provides usable feedback from that frequency. In this way you can use dowsing to locate lost items in your home.

Dowsing in Practice

1) Intent. This is where you need to have your question very clear in your mind. This is paramount in all divination work, and not just in dowsing.

2) Learning to work with our dowsing instrument, whether it be a pendulum, rods or something else.

We need to learn what is a yes answer and what is no. So practice first on question with known answers, like Show me where the table is, Show me where the door is; in these cases rods will move together in the direction of the item. If you ask a yes or no question, the rods will normally move apart for the negative and together or parallel for the positive. Pendulums will swing in particular ways for yes and no. Practice asking your pendulum with known answers that can only output a yes or no answer. ‘Is there a table in this room?’ is a question of the sort required.

Practise first, so you can recognise the answers.

Let’s say we are looking for a lost item, say a book using two bent rods made from a wire coat-hanger. Picture the book clearly in your mind’s eye. Ask the question ‘please show me where the book is’ as you slowly walk about the house. Point the rods in front of you, holding them loosely. If the rods move together in one direction, turn your whole body to face that direction; if the rods splay out, this is the wrong direction, stop, and adjust your direction.

Pendulums are usually made of crystal, wood or metal. They are finely balanced and usually have a point at the bottom end. Choose the one that ‘talks’ to you. It really doesn’t have to be the most expensive or the clearest crystal. I have a friend who dowses with a raw piece of amethyst on her necklace! You could even use a washer on a bit of string. There are those who believe the length of the string is vital or must be a certain ratio to the weight of the pendulum.

First we need to get ‘attuned’ to the pendant/ dowsing crystal. Hold the thread between your thumb and forefinger. You may like to be seated to keep your elbow steady on a table. Allow the pendulum to dangle freely and don’t panic if your hand moves. Simply relax as much as is practical for you to do so. Ask a question with a yes or no answer that you know the answer to. Watch what the pendulum does. It may swing from side to side, or to and away from you. Let’s say you asked a Yes question and it swings side to side. Ask another Yes question and see if it does the same thing. Now ask a No question, again watch what it does.

In this way you will learn to recognise the answers your pendulum gives. It may also swing in a circle, clockwise and anti clockwise, depending on the answer.

When you have ‘got to know’ your pendulum, then you may start on other questions. But don’t make the question too broad, or you may get confusing answers. Pendulum dowsing is highly specific.
